A typical piano lesson includes technique exercises and a study of repertoire. The Music Studios assigns repertoire to students from various genres that builds on their strengths and targets their weaknesses. Students learn to appreciate refinement in music and perform at a high level, and not just to play the correct notes. 

Students  take on examinations at the discretion of the teacher and only if they are ready for it. Readiness for an examination means that students should be able to explore other repertoire on top of examination pieces with ease. Part of why we learn music is to explore it's richness and vastness, and this lies far beyond the handful of examination pieces suggested in various syllabi. Not all students take well to examinations and it is helpful to note that there are other ways, such as public performances, that can motivate the child as much, if not more.

Students in the Piano Performance Programme must attend weekly individual lessons and quarterly masterclasses. Participation in other programmes are not compulsory but are encouraged. Students are expected to commit sufficient practice time daily to accomplish what is taught each week. This differs from student to student.

We have an open door policy for all parents for students of all ages and we strongly encourage parents with children under 12 to sit in lessons. For many young children, having a parent sit in the lesson provides a crucial sense of security and is an active part of the learning process. A familiar adult can be a source of comfort, helping a child feel safe and less anxious in a new environment or when facing new challenges. By observing the lesson, a parent learns exactly what and how to practice with their child at home, making the parent an effective "practice partner".

Ultimately, the decision often comes down to the child's personality and the teacher's specific policies. If you do observe, the most helpful role is that of a quiet, supportive observer—taking notes and letting the teacher lead.

All programmes at The Music Studios are designed, curated and overseen by Dr. Khoo Hui Ling, who brings with her a multitude of teaching experiences locally and internationally, from preparatory levels to higher education. At The Music Studios, piano studies have a structured progression (for total beginners all the way through to adult learners) alongside a customized approach for each student, whether the focus be on examinations, performance and competitions, learning for exploration or a combination. There are ample performance opportunities from studio recitals, public appearances and masterclasses. Holistic musicianship and friendships are cultivated as lessons integrate technique, theory and musicianship together with holiday activities such as music appreciation and piano ensemble programmes.
